Five Steps to Owning Your Magic Mushroom Chocolate Bar Experience

The benefits of magic mushrooms are immense (and too numerous to list here), and you therefore may be inspired to create your own mushroom chocolate bars at home. (I hope so!) Maybe you grow your own mushrooms at home or maybe you don’t have easy access to magic mushroom chocolate bars in your area. Below, we give you a crash course on how to DIY mushroom chocolate bars of your own.

Step #1: Source Your Mushroom Chocolate Ingredients

For simplicity, rather than make your own chocolate, go find your favorite milk or dark chocolate bar (dark if you’re vegan, of course). Purchase a few to serve as your base ingredient.

Next, source your favorite magic mushrooms. By magic, we mean psilo-cyb!n — not Amanita, no synthetics, which often get shoved into bars you purchase over-the-counter. You may grow your own mushrooms, or you may have access to mushrooms locally from a reputable seller.

A word of caution:

We’re not making Tre House Amanita bars here. We’re not making PolkaDot bars with synthetics here, either. Just chocolate bars made with pure mushroom fruiting bodies. General rule of thumb: Avoid Amanita + synthetics. There’s a place for them, but I’m committed to safely and naturally raw-dawging life (and I think you should be, too). And of course…avoid Diamond Shruumz chocolate bars at all costs.

Step #2: Gather Your Tools

Gather all the tools you’ll need to get started. Go wrangle the following:

  • Double boiler (a medium pot to heat water in with a metal bowl to sit atop)

  • Bowls

  • Scale

  • Spatula

  • Mold (ideally polycarbonate)

  • Heavy duty aluminum foil

  • Coffee grinder

Step #3: Prep and Measure Your Magic Mushroom Dosage

If your magic mushrooms aren’t already ground or in flour form, grind your fruiting bodies (the parts of the mushroom that grow above ground) as finely as possible with a coffee grinder. The more finely ground, the better, and the less you’ll experience them in the chocolate.

Next, decide how much active ingredient you’d like in each dose. We’d recommend 300mg of a standard potency mushroom per chocolate square, assuming 10 squares per chocolate bar. That works out to about 3g of shrooms per 3oz bar. Weigh out the proper amount, and set it aside. (Note dosing chart below.)

Step #4: Make Your Mushroom Chocolate Bar

Now it’s time to make the magic happen! (Pun intended.)

Slowly melt your chocolate — generally don’t heat it above 85 degrees. Chocolate needs “tempering,” and heating it too much will prevent the chocolate from crystalizing properly when it’s cooled (see my earlier post about chocolate tempering here).

Gently pour-in your ground fruiting bodies, and stir evenly — don’t whisk, in order to avoid air bubbles. Move to mix quickly, because you need to avoid “cooking” your mushrooms at high heat for an extended period of time.

Once evenly stirred, pour your chocolate mushroom mix into your molds, and gently vibrate the molds to bring to the surface any bubbles, which will aid the tempering process.

Next, place your filled molds in the refrigerator (or even better, in a wine fridge) until your bars have cooled and have broken away from their molds (once the bars have cooled enough, you’ll see where they’ve separated from the edges of their mold cavities). This will take 1–4 hours, depending on how quickly you chill your chocolate.

Finally, remove your bars from the fridge, gently break them from their molds. Wrap any bars that you aren’t consuming right away in aluminum foil (ideally in heavy-duty foil), and keep them in a cool, dark, temperature-controlled place at around 70 degrees.

Step #5: Enjoy!

The final step is to ENJOY your shroom concoction! Whether you choose to microdose or hero dose, here’s an approximate dosing chart for the average person:

  • 200–500mg >> microdose

  • 1–1.5g >> recreational dose

  • 2–3g >> terapeutic dose

  • 3–4g >> hero dose
